Schools "Grub in a Tub" Show Gardens Trade Stands Fine Art Silent Auction

Our programme for 2009 has not yet been finalised, but will be developed from the successful format of 2007:

Gala Evening, Friday 15th June 2007

Our gala evening this year was a private event by Invitation of . The weather was not as kind to us as two years ago but it only rained on us a couple of times - and then only for a matter of minutes; it was remarkable though when the rain came how many people suddenly became art lovers as the extensive Fine Art tent suddenly filled up.

Rain apart, the champagne flowed as guests took advantage of what is a beautiful garden in any weather, and we had the pleasure of seeing our Rector the Revd. Julie Ramsbotham and  daughter Catherine in one of the many pictures in Country Life's subsequent write-up, with a caption questioning whether they were serving angels-on-horseback or devils-on-horseback.

Public days, Saturday 16th  & Sunday 17th June 2007

The weather did us rather better on the Saturday and Sunday - a little damp at one time on the Saturday (but not bad) and Sunday was a lovely day.

The Gardens were a credit to Harry Henderson, John Connor and his team, and around 10,000 people came through the gates to enjoy them.

And enjoy them they did. Judging by the comments as our visitors left and the comments we have received since, this show was a tremendous success.

That success was contributed to by many people, including:

the competitors in our competitions - please see the relevant pages of this website for the results of:

The Show Gardens competition, sponsored by the Greenham Common Trust
The
Schools 'Grub in a tub' competition sponsored by Newbury Building Society

and all those who helped in any way:

Joanna Robson of the Craft Workshop who organised the "Kids corner" on the Lawn for the wondrous Painted faces to be seen around the Gardens.
The
East Woodhay Silver Band and the Hungerford Town Band who played in the Gardens during both days.
Newbury Rotary who organised our very successful Silent Auction
Dreweatt Neate
;
as well as sponsoring our Fine Art Marquee Dreweatt's provided a "Roadshow"-style antiques and art identification service in the marquee.

and everyone in our villages that helped on the gates, selling programmes or plant guides, teas or plants, or during the extensive preparations beforehand.

An open air service  "Praise in the Garden" was conducted by the Rev. Julie Ramsbotham in the old church in the Garden, on the Sunday, in the presence of the Bishop of Reading, seen here to the left. Music was supplied by the Berkshire Music Centre and St Gabriels choir led the singing.
A big thank you goes to BBC Radio Berkshire and their resident gardening guru Colin Evans who was broadcasting live from the gardens for much of Saturday and Sunday morning.

We owe particular thanks to our villages, led by Inkpen, for organising the Newbury Racecourse Tea Garden, providing coffee, tea and home-made cakes,

.
There was plenty to eat and drink;  but our friends at The Garden had a constant flow of custom for their Grills, Crepes, Hog Roast and of course their Pimms Bar. Equally we believe that the other traders that supported us saw an excellent flow of business - please see here for the list of Trade Stands attending
